CERTANIA Industrial Analytics GmbH is a manufacturer of certified material-specific CRM reference samples
Manufacturers of reference samples for optical emission spectrometry cast their samples with an appropriate adjustment of the concentration ranges of all alloying elements. However, the chemical composition of the reference samples usually does not correspond to any defined alloy quality. For an unambiguous evaluation of all relevant elements of a product/material, two or even three different reference samples are therefore required in most cases.
To enable the control of a material with just one sample, CERTANIA Industrial Analytics GmbH develops alloy-specific reference samples.
The control of an analysis in routine operation is thus possible with minimal time expenditure and by measuring only a single reference sample. This allows for quick and reliable verification of results, both with high-resolution spark spectrometers and in the context of confusion checks, material sorting, PMI tests, or similar, using mobile spark spectrometers.
Different designations for reference samples in spark spectrometry: CRM/ZRM, RM, SUS
Certified Reference Material (CRM)
Certified Reference Material is a reference material with an accompanying certificate. The certificate specifies an uncertainty for each certified value at a defined confidence level, based on certified procedures.
Traceable CRM
These CRMs are certified by a national metrological institute or by an accredited reference material manufacturer. Traceable reference samples hold the highest hierarchical position among reference materials, as direct traceability to SI units is sought, and reference material manufacturers accredited according to DIN EN ISO 17034 (formerly ISO Guide 34) enjoy a very high level of trust. Traceable reference samples are a prerequisite for all application areas accredited according to DIN EN ISO 17025. The designation of certified traceable samples usually begins with EZRM, ECRM, ERM, BAM, SRM, SCRM, SS-CRM.
Reference Material (RM)
Reference materials are materials that are sufficiently constant and homogeneous to be used for calibration, for evaluating measurement procedures, or for assigning material values. These reference samples are typically examined by several laboratories as part of a round-robin test and delivered with an analysis certificate. In these certificates, the requirements according to ISO Guide 35 are not always met, and certification may be based on other regulations. Some manufacturers issue very well-documented certificates. However, the certification process (number of independent laboratories, methods, uncertainties, etc.) is not fully described by all issuers.
Calibration Samples Setting-Up Sample (SUS)
Calibration samples or setting-up samples are materials of specially tested homogeneity for which the specified quantitative composition is not certified. The purpose of these samples is to check and maintain the signal stability of the spectrometer, i.e., to monitor the long-term stability of the device. A measured value is assigned to the samples during calibration using CRMs and RMs.
